Now, were there tribes that DID spend hella time hunting and gathering? Probably. But my project is about looking at how abundant societies spent their time and organized themselves politically. Over and over again we see flat, property-less cultures when food is easy to come by — as it was and is in the Great Rift Valley, and once was on the shores of San Francisco Bay. There are a million examples of scarcity-minded pre-agrarian cultures fighting their neighbors and brutally subjugating their own women. But navigating toward a sustainable future, in my reading of it, requires looking at how stable abundant cultures were organized. If ANY (and there were many) could be peaceful and chill, and spent MILLENNIA without “progressing” to an unsustainable scale, then we should figure out how and emulate their behavior.
